How to make friends in Toronto

Friendly, polite, and surprisingly hard to get close to. Here is how people in Toronto actually make friends.

Be My Friend AI members in Toronto so far: fewer than 10.

Always a range, never an exact number. In-person introductions open in a city only when at least 6 checked members there share a language, and only after a free ID and age check; that isn't open anywhere yet. Online introductions are open now.

Toronto has a reputation: people are nice, and plans never happen. Newcomers often say it is easy to have a pleasant chat and hard to get invited anywhere. Part of that is size and distance; part of it is that many locals have had the same circle since school. And with half the city born outside Canada, a lot of people are in exactly the same position as you.

That last part is the good news. Toronto has an enormous number of free, public, regular things to do, many of them made specifically for people who are new. If you go to the same one every week, it will turn into a social life.

Your first month in Toronto

Week 1: find your nearest library branch and community centre and look at their listings. In Toronto, your neighbourhood is your social world; the TTC is fine, but a 70-minute trip across the city will kill a weekly habit.

Week 2: commit to one weekly thing: a drop-in sport, a library club, a volunteer shift. Go four times before you decide whether you like it.

Weeks 3 and 4: suggest a coffee or a walk afterwards. A coffee in Toronto is roughly C$3 to C$6. Torontonians are polite, which sometimes means they wait for you to suggest the plan. Be the one who suggests it, with a day and a time.

Seasons: summer is festival season, with patios, island trips and free outdoor events, and everyone is out. Winter, roughly December to March, is long and cold, and people retreat. That is when indoor things like libraries, board-game cafés, rec-centre sports and classes become the city's real social life. September feels like a fresh start, and is a great time to sign up for something.

Neighbourhoods, seasons and the Toronto way

About half of the people in Toronto were born outside Canada. That makes it one of the best cities in the world for meeting people who are also looking for friends, because so many of them are newcomers too, or remember being one.

Toronto life is very seasonal. In summer, people take the ferry to the Toronto Islands, walk the boardwalk at the Beaches, wander Kensington Market and fill the patios. In early autumn, Nuit Blanche turns the city into a free, all-night art walk, and it is one of the easiest nights of the year to start a conversation with a stranger. In winter, the City runs outdoor skating rinks, and adult social sports leagues (volleyball, dodgeball, curling) keep a lot of people sane until spring.

Social sports leagues are worth a special mention. You can sign up alone, and you'll be placed on a team. The same team every week, plus a drink or a snack afterwards, is a proven recipe for friendship. It also gives shy people something to do with their hands.

Finally, think small. The Annex, Leslieville, the Junction, North York and Scarborough each have their own life. Pick things close to home, and your new friends will be close to home too.

Where Be My Friend AI fits

We are a small, new friendship website, not a big app. You write a letter; Sami's AI assistant writes back (it always says it is an AI); and when there is someone you might get on with, it asks you both. Nothing is shared unless you both say yes. Right now, introductions are online: pen pals, study partners and people to talk ideas with, anywhere you share a language. It's a gentle way to start while you try the places above.

Questions about making friends in Toronto

Why is it hard to make friends in Toronto?

People are friendly but busy, the city is spread out, and many locals already have long-standing friend groups. Regular, local activities solve most of it, because you see the same people every week.

What is free in Toronto for meeting people?

Toronto Public Library programmes, many City of Toronto drop-in recreation programmes, volunteering through Volunteer Toronto, nature walks, and parkrun on Saturday mornings.

I just moved to Canada. Where should I start?

A newcomer organisation like CultureLink and your local library branch are both good first stops. Both are used to welcoming people who are new to the country.

Does Be My Friend AI do in-person introductions in Toronto?

Not yet. We are new, and the box at the top of this page shows roughly how many members we have here. In-person introductions open in a city only when at least 6 checked members there share a language, and only after a free ID and age check. Online introductions work now.

Is Be My Friend AI a dating app?

No. It is for friendship only, for adults 18 and over. Romantic approaches lead to removal.
